Angels Unaware

My wife and I were driving around today running some errands and we pulled up to an intersection as we got off the freeway. As we came to a stop, we looked over and there was someone begging at the intersection. Something struck me different about him. First of all, he had a ton of stuff. He had a bike and a bike trailer packed with a sleeping bag and what looked like bags of clothing and camping gear. He had a pooch taht looked to be healthy and happy and he had a big drink cooler sitting next to where he was standing. The sign on the back of his trailer said, “Just passing through, anything helps”. I also noticed that he was very energetic and happy. I don’t believe he was looking for handouts as much as he was looking for hospitality. It looked like he was on a journey and truly just passing through. But what caught my eye the most was the sign he was holding. It said, “Might Be An Angel”. I immediately smiled. My first thought is “that is creative”. Then I started thinking about it and about the fact that the message he was giving was perfect for his circumstances.

When I got home, I was drawn to the passage he was referencing. Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” What a mysterious passage. Honestly, what do you think of when you hear this? I know we have “seen” many different human interpretations of angels. The picture on this post is just that. We do have some descriptions of angels in the Bible. Some(there are different versions of angels) have wings, some are very strong, some emit a bright light. Scripture also says that they can take on the form of man(Daniel 8:15; 10:16, 18). That is boggling to me. Hebrews 1:14 says angels are spirit. Acts 12:15 even hints that we each have an angel of our own(guardian angel?). I just think this is so cool.

In my quick study on this as I got home, I read through a simple commentary on Hebrews. In the commentary, they spoke of the culture at that time the book was written(believed to be between about 45-95 AD). At that time, the Christian church was growing and with that growth came more intense persecution. It was very normal for someone choosing Christianity, to be kicked out of their families, homes and villages. There were not a lot of Holiday Inn’s at the time, so it was very common to stop and stay with whoever would take you in for the night. Christians were excited for the opportunity to take in a stranger. This was a great privilege to encourage the faith from one Christian to another. There may have even been the chance of housing an Apostle or someone who had seen or heard Jesus in person. What an amazing opportunity to hear, first hand, about the Savior they were committing their lives to.

The theme of “Love Your Neighbor” has been talked about a lot lately. Hebrews 13:2 really sheds a new light on that. The first verse in Hebrews 13 says, “Let brotherly love continue.” What an exhortation. Don’t get comfortable. Be hospitable. Take the opportunity to encourage anyone crossing your path. We are called to love, so don’t stop. So, who was this guy at the intersection? An angel? Well, he was a messenger. I hope we will choose to not be unaware.

  1. Great Post. ๐Ÿ™‚

How many of us living in the times of fear that we do would invite a total stranger into our homes where our Kids live?

Does Fear or Love rule our lives?

Are we living as Jesus would have us live?

We hear stories from all over about how we cannot trust strangers (or even our own families! Just today I have read with horror and disgust of MULTIPLE cases in France in just one year of mothers killing and hiding their own dead babies (more than one child per mother!) in their homes!!! Here in my country someone ( most likely a parent ) has thrown a small child’s body in a suitcase into a pond in a large city that was found several days later by a 12 year old!)

Horror exists! – do we take a chance with our own lives and our children’s to live the teachings of Christ?

Can we ever afford to be THAT Chrisitian?

Glad that i do not have children myself in these times!

  2. 2 Brandy

So how much money did you give the angel? ๐Ÿ˜‰ heehee

I have seen this guy….he has lights on the back of his little trailer thingy. We saw him one night last week with his flashing lights on the highway and then I saw him the next day. NO JOKE! ๐Ÿ˜€

LWBUT’s comment is true too…. having kids makes it hard to pick up someone for a ride, open our homes to strangers, even pull over sometimes to give a few bucks is risky. I know it changes how/what I do for others….thinking about my kids’ safety first.

On a FUNNIER note, we saw a guy once with a sign that said “I won’t lie, it’s for beer” AH HA HA!!!!

  3. lwbut and Brandy – You both bring up huge concerns. I am not sure I would flippantly bring anyone into our home. These times are very concerning dealing with who knows what. In this passage though, there is one word that stands out, “hospitable”. I think this is the key.

There is emphasis on 2 things in the chapter. one being Christians looking for an opportunity to love on other Christians and encourage each other. Second, the opportunity to reach out to people and show them the love of Christ. As we look at our society today, we realize that often there are times where this is not safe or wise. But, hospitality can be much more than just housing someone.

Hospitable means, “receiving or treating guests or strangers warmly and generously”. This could mean so many things for us and our ability to share the Love of Christ with others. First century Christians looked forward to the chance to house a traveler or someone cast out. So what could we see us doing today?

  4. OK I went a tad off topic – no mention of angels in what i wrote – blame it on the (developing here) case of a TWO year old boy who was seemingly shaken to death my his 26 year old mother (or possibly her boyfreind, not all facts are out yet) – she has been arrested though – not him. And then she put her kid in a suitcase and threw it in a local pond to be found by a 12 year old six days later ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Could it get worse? Apparently! The kids grandmother who cared for the child for some time warned the local child protection services that he was in danger from his mother before this happened ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    Angels? oh Yeah.

I believe in the human Soul.

I believe it is eternal and lives before ‘we’ do.

I believe we can as humans learn how to be conscious and still be able to hear what our Soul is speaking to us with great clarity. I believe Christ did such and was teaching His Disciples to do the same.

I believe that Our Soul can connect to greater ‘powers’ (a form of Angel ‘Heirarchy’) so as to work ‘miracles’.

We never know if the next person we meet (or love or despise) is one such human. That is what the passage in Hebrews says clearly to me.

InWorship – one way we could extend hospitality in ‘safety’, if such is truly Christian, is to help establish ‘refuges’ for those who walk alone.

Providing them with what are basic human needs: shelter, food, safety, companionship, a sense of self-worth and value, Love.

    And guiding them to it.

I feel strongly that such would soon be overrun with the needs of those outweighing the generosity of those who ‘provide’ in our ‘me too/what’s in it for me’ current societies.

Giving such refuge the name of a ‘church’?? Hmmmmm… did i really just say that???? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. lwbut – I actually think you were pretty much right on topic. Like I said, our desire needs to be hospitable. Your case is extreme(the death of this child), no doubt, but still valid. we have to be cautious.

Regarding angels, I think your take on Hebrews is interesting. I understand the connection to God’s power, but according to scripture, that is directly from His Holy Spirit living within us. If we are to do miracles, it is by God’s power alone working through us. The Bible does have a lot to say about angels. On thing is that they are their own creature and creation according to scriptures. Here is an interesting article on them,

I believe in the soul as well, but not in connection to angels. I believe our soul is separate from any angelic presence(maybe that wasn’t what you were saying). I am not sure angels have souls, but they are Spirit according to scriptures.

Anything “in Spirit” is interesting to me. There is one of those areas that probably comes down to a “faith”? You would know if anything Spirit can be contained in science or who has attempted to do this.

By the way, are there any scientific studies that have dealt with paranormal…ghosts. That has always been an interest to me. I have my thoughts, but I would like to see what science has to say, if there is something said.

The “Church” absolutely needs to step up to the plate on this. The church has failed and because of this the government has taken over. Where the church used to operate schools, welfare and health care, the government now is the provider of all of it. it saddens me. Each of us needs to step up and make it happen. We need to quit going to church and be the church.

Also, it is inevitable that human nature will always be prevalent, but I can’ get cynical about it. Otherwise, I cease to move and I cease to make a difference.

  6. Drat – just lost a long comment here! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Short version (but the first one was so darn good! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Forgive anything that sounds ‘harsh’ – not intended.

    1. think the author of the article misses a couple of things – slightly ‘off the mark’. can explain if asked.

    2. Soul and Angels have the same source – Spirit!

    3. Since same source they have something ‘in common’ and Soul can access the ‘power’ of Angel(s)

    4. problem! – our consciousness is not ‘spirit’ and so often does not ‘make contact’ with our own Soul! – ego gets ‘in way’

    5. Scientists can be laughed out of town by attempting study of paranomal – so not much money or effort put towards such a goal.

6 US and Rusian Military have put big sums of money into paranoral research – some results filter out to us in the ‘real’ world as opposed to the World of the ‘spook’.

    7. Science demands repetable experiment anything that cannot be repeated is not to be trusted. Spirits just don’t comply!

    8. No scientist has ever invented a device to accurately reveal supernatural data. Difficult to show ‘unreality’ with ‘real’ equipment.

9.Lot of great stuff about non-government religious schools and charities over here including fact that Aussie Govt gives twice as many tax dollars to such schools as they do to state schools even though state school students outnumber religious school students by the reverse – 2 to 1.

    How is that ‘fair’??

    10. Agree – it should come back down to ‘us’ to fix. First fix ourselves, then spread it ‘out’ ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. That’s pretty good, I wouldn’t worry about the first comment being lost. And there isn’t anything remotely harsh here…that I read, so have at it ๐Ÿ™‚

I am curious of your thoughts on that article. it is one of probably about 4 or 5 that I did enjoy the info on. Could find the others again if you want me to link to them.

#2 and #3 I would take them a step farther. The source(of power)…God. they are spirit yes, but it is more than that for me. Souls and angels are on a Spiritual plain, but the Bible does say that angels can take on the image of man and be seen by us(whether we are willing to see or not…or maybe better said, whether we notice them or not, they are here).

I think this is where we as humans are so privileged. to be able to enjoy the experience of the physical and yet have complete access to the spiritual/meta-physical. Of course you have said it well. Our ego(conscience) often gets in the way of us experiencing anything “greater than ourselves”.

I believe there is a lot to be said about the paranormal. I think it is simpler than “ghosts” and “unsettled souls”. i do believe in the presence of angels and demons and I think a lot could be said about this in dealing with “experiences” of the paranormal. it does intrigue me. i have always been a horror movie buff and I truly enjoy the “darker” films that deal with the paranormal. I like to see how people think of it. if i am able to ask God questions when I am in His “eternal” presence, paranormal will be on the list.

In regards to #9 I get so frustrated with governments role in our lives. I have been discussing this on another blog and I do not think government should have as much “influence” into our lives as it does. Especially in the US regarding our freedoms and who we were originally designed to be as a country. We are becoming a socialist nation and I don’t like so much government involvement.

  8. Thank you B for your understanding and for your willingness to dig deeper into my ‘thoughts’. ๐Ÿ™‚

Please – take my comments much further – i merely abbreviated them for time and space. Hmmmm…

That is so small a part of where i’d take them myself ๐Ÿ˜‰ but you did get the ‘idea’ ๐Ÿ™‚

Where i have the most trouble with the Bible is not in what it says – it’s the way it says it.

I generally refer to my pocket KJV (more frequently the online KJV since the print in mu=ine is getting ‘smaller’ it seems ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I got one for closeness to the original greek/latin source of translation over the more user friendly modern versions.

They can be a little less than ‘precise’ for my logical mind.

Take Heb 12:22-23 as the article quotes. Verse 22 mentions an innumerable company of Angels whereas 23 mentions the spirits of Just men made Perfect. I can’t see that one does not mean (include) the other whereas The Author sees them as two distinct groupings.

The words used at the time of writing do not hold exactly the same meaning (to all people) to us today.
I get the way cross referencing works and use it to my ability but sometimes it doesn’t make things clearer but takes you further away from where you were.

Still that is not to say the Bible itself is not clear – just the minds of those who use it may not be in perfect alignment with those who wrote/translated it and we can’t question them to ask exactly what they had in mind at the time.

But to Spirit – i think we both agree that ‘God’ is the One source. From Him all things flow (like waters).

How’s this for an analogy. He is the Ocean and the Wind, we are all patches of Earth.(raised up from the Ocean Floor)

The rains are picked up by the wind and dropped down on High Places. The rains gain speed and strength from the mountain land and carve parts away and carry them downstream and also combine with other ‘streams’.

The earth (ourselves) in their path are modified by their flow which can cut away form us rock or deposit silt upon us, modifying us. Waters allow us to give forth life from our dry soil. A spring can appear on our ‘surface’ and flow out of ‘us’ – the source is the same – the ocean where all water comes from and returns one day to. The water frozen in ice takes millions of years to return to the ocean – but it inevitably returns. If we just consider our own ‘patch of soil we can believe that we are all important but that some irrelevant things outside us provides some of the things we ‘are’ or that things from us our our own (the spring eg). If we see the bigger picture which includes the Ocean we reduce our own self worth and can give credit where it is due.

Feel free to borrow from my original work any time anywhere. ๐Ÿ˜‰

sorry for the long post ๐Ÿ˜‰ maybe i should email this stuff?

  9. ‘things from us our our own ‘ should be things from us ARE our own! (some think) ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. As for governments ( particularly US/Aus Govts ) – DON’T get me ‘started’ ๐Ÿ˜‰

The thing that p—‘s me off the most?

The way they try to keep you in line and in fear by telling you you need them ‘for your own protection’! Grrrrrrr.

What we really need is protecting FROM our governments, not by them! So much more so than we need protecting from foreign governments. (who really should stick their beak where it fits (up their own …… ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ))

  11. I want to study Heb 12:22-23 a little before I respond. I see it a little differently, but i don’t want to just say that, I want it to sound as cool as when you speak ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ll get back at you tomorrow with this. I am going to head to sleep…I’m ready for bed.

Chat at you tomorrow, looking forward to it!

  12. no rush…. just curious if you had time to re-read Hebrews 12?

Please don’t feel under any pressure here – not from or for my sake anyways !

I know you have a full life and appreciate that we don’t have the time to do everything we would like to.

Man these blogs can get inTENSE! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. Your Right! I need to get on this. I will have some downtime this Friday. I will have something then.

  14. That’s a fabulous post.

It reminds me of the “alien among you” passages in the Torah.

  15. Jason – I’ll have to look that one up ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. If it’s in the Torah should be somewhere in the Books of Moses too i’m thinking – Old T 1 – 5? Aliens in your borders i think is the full quote but that is just memory – i stand waiting to be ‘corrected’ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Seen any illegal aliens lately people?? ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. I sure do love words with more than one meaning hehehehehee ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. I wonder if an angel needs to always be some sort of other being. I mean, at times, couldn’t we all be messengers from God.

Back in the beginning of summer I wrote about an itinerant preacher lady, Sherri, who rides across the country on her bike. We picked her, feeling like we were doing he ‘right’ thing for this poor soul. She ended up ministering to us. She was a joy.

A couple of months later I heard from a couple down in Georgia who picked up the same lady, under almost exactly the same circumstances and being left with the same feeling that they had been served.

  19. Hey Christian – Absolutely, we all can be messengers of God. I think there is almost a Great commission to that effect ๐Ÿ™‚ I also understand that it can be so much more than evangelism.

I do think the Bible points out that there are both “Angels” and “Humans” as messengers.

I also don’t believe in coincidences, just divine appointments. I think we always have the chance to see and hear as God would have us. We just are most often tied up in our physical…self centered lives. (DANG! I sound like lwbut)

So, who’s to say this old lady isn’t an angel? I love stories like that. I truly believe there will be a special place for that kind of heart in heaven.

  20. lwbut – I am finally getting back to you on this and I apologize for my delay.

    Hebrews 12:22-23,

Here’s what I see. the author is speaking to Christians about the “kingdom” they are now a part of. A “new” life in Jesus

I personally believe in a heaven and a hell. I cannot say what they look like exactly, but I believe there is a place that some will be welcomed into and others will not.

As I read this passage, I see the picture painted of a life that is now “living” with God. We are now welcomed into God’s presence. In His presence is jesus, Angels and those who are now “in Christ Jesus”.

When Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the temple that kept us from the presence of God, was torn in two. A gateway to God was literally opened up through His Son Jesus.

The author here paints that picture. we are no longer “standing at the foot of Mount Sinai” merely listening to God’s voice, but instead we are “dwelling where God resides”. we are in his presence.

So, based on this, I still believe that angles and humans are separate in all respects.

  21. Cool! ๐Ÿ™‚

How are you with Angels taking human ‘form’ for some indeterminate length of time or perfected spirits of man being Angels with their heavenly Father?

Does that kinda ‘blur’ the demarcation zone a little – or not?

If an angel was in human form would it necessarily reveal it’s True nature to you or would it only appear to you if you were the one for whom it’s purpose while here on earth was? What if it was here to test (all) man’s awareness? ( goes back to how would you know if an Angel walked amongst us and entertaining Angels ‘unaware’)

What if I believe One D is an Angel in human form? Am i in any way wrong?

Boy, when you get me thinking you sure get me thinking ! lol ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. I love it when you think ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t think that angels can take on human form. And I don’t think the Bible says that. It says that they can take on the “appearance” of man. So they can look to us to be human, but are entirely angel. How does that look? Hmmmm…not sure.

You have a lot of good questions that I am sure that i can’t answer. Frankly, I am not sure if any of us could. There is that “x factor” in our relationship with God. the unknown. The not entirely clear. The “My thoughts are not your thoughts” stuff.

“What if I believe One D is an Angel in human form? Am i in any way wrong?”

I would have to agree(cause I think she is), but purely from a metaphorical standpoint standpoint ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. I would have to agree too and would not be who i am if i did not also differ just a tad ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think what i might have been saying ( lwbut’s uncertainty principle is hitting home HARD lately) is – if it looks like a duck – to us folk – and it quacks like a duck (again as we hear with our own ears) then we usually take it to be a duck – even if it is really an Angel in dis guys and we are, in fact, a goose!

God sure has a sense of humour that we often just don’t ‘get’. He doesn’t lead us astray – we can do that all by ourselves. ๐Ÿ™‚

As for being metaphorical – am not sure i was, altogether, you know???

And i think you get i was not ever trying to ‘trip’ you here huh? ๐Ÿ™‚ The ‘reward’ for ‘solving’ one Mystery is to be presented with a greater one.

  24. Tripping me up? How could you ๐Ÿ™‚

    Those days are long gone.

I love the questions/thoughts…feel free to always keep them coming. they keep me sharp and make me think as well.

So have you written down said “Uncertainty Principle”? Heck, these days you could probably publish it and make a mint ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. WE all have our friends to keep us honed and ‘sharp’. Sadly some friends can ‘dull’ our senses a little too – or we may tend to let them that is…

The Uncer Principle – ask Tam to look it up for you ๐Ÿ˜‰ and you’ve just given me an ‘idea’… hmmmm.

If you really want to you could look on my blog under ‘Uncertainty’ – Part II – about 2/3rds the way ‘down’. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You have read it before, huh??? ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. 26 brightshinyobject

    mmmmm dull friends…
