I am a Creative Arts Pastor in Southern Oregon and I absolutely love what I do. I get to be who God created me to be and do that for a living and as ministry. I am very grateful. BUT, do not have a tat. I would love one. Maybe someday. My Dad has a small one and he to this day regrets it and in my discussions with him, I promised I would not get one in his living years, out of respect. I will hold to that. I love my Dad!

I like the shades myself. Mmh, I wonder who I was thinking of. It’s someone we’ve been chatting with but they said it on their own site. Any ideas? Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend getting one myself. Although I have been thinking about the possibility of having a tattoo done on the top of my head that would look like hair.
Christian, I’d go with tattooed hair! My dad wears a toupee that is so obvious it might as well have a chin strap!
And I totally am goo-goo over Brents “About” pic! I use the same pic on my phone so I can see it even more when he calls 😉

Since you’re a creative arts pastor, been having a discussion–should/can a worship leader (standing up front) be the administrative guy (behind the scenes) for all the creative arts(lighting, audio, video, scheduling, etc)? in other words–how does it work for your church? or…should they be separate? would love your input!

GREAT Question. I fully believe they should be different positions. I actually think there should be 3…I’ll explain.
First of all, I have way too many hats. I cannot devote time to everything the way i would like. However, I will in no way allow there to be something done that is not thought through, but I know that things we have done could be better. Of course, many churches do not have the money or staffing power to make the dream of multiple positions a reality. There are seasons and we(Our church) are in one now.
Second, I see a great setup with 3 positions.
1) The Worship Pastor or Arts Pastor. This person is the actual Pastor in this mix. They are the leader of the ministry and the visionary and the connection to the leadership of the church. This person would be the Pastor/manager of the teams.
2) The Tech Director or manager. this person would be in charge of all technical needs with lighting, sound and video. this person would manage and schedule the tech teams. this person would train and enable their teams to do their jobs. this person would answer directly to the Worship/Arts Pastor.
3) The worship Leader(s). this could be a person or multiple people. they would be responsible for the music teams, their training and their equipping. this person would answer directly to the Worship/Arts Pastor.
Obviously this is a very simple look at this. I actually have it all written out with job descriptions, but this gives you and idea.
So maybe, someday I will be able to be a part of a setup like this. right now it is a constant process of moving myself out of positions so that I can be freed to focus on others. it is also a management of what is necessary and what is not. Seeing the priorities and letting go of what is not essential. you can see how that would hold a ministry back, but I do have to say we are still moving forward.

Do you have any contacts with Seattle churches? My friend’s 8 yr old is in seattle children’s hospital while dad and 3 sisters are back home in Alaska. They could use a friendly face. Thanks for any help you may have. Even if its just church phone numbers or something
